Biography
 

Soprano Kathryn Guthrie began her musical education growing up in Vienna, Austria, cultivating German language skills and a deep love of music. She is finishing her Master of Music with renowned contemporary music soprano Phyllis Bryn-Julson at the illustrious Peabody Conservatory, and received her Bachelor of Music degree under Dr. Sylvia McClain and Dr. Constance Rock from the University of Connecticut, graduating summa cum laude and with honors.

She was most recently seen as the commanding "Die Königin der Nacht" in Peabody Opera Mainstage’s production of Die Zauberflöte to great acclaim, and will be seen this November in the mainstage production of Leoš Janácek’s The Cunning Little Vixen as the title character. Kathryn appeared in celebrated seasonal productions of Hansel and Gretel as Gretel with both the University of Connecticut’s Opera Theatre and Opera Theatre of Connecticut, delighting children and adults alike with her joyful interpretation of the classic fairytale.

Continuing her affection for Germanic language and culture, this summer she was in residence at the American Institute of Musical Studies in Graz, Austria, where she won second place in the esteemed AIMS Meistersinger Competition and sang Marzelline’s aria in the premiere orchestra concert at the famous Stephaniensaal. The previous summer Kathryn was in attendance at the intensive German for Singers program at Middlebury College in Vermont, where she studied both German diction and voice, developing an enjoyable fluency in German. In the spring of 2005 she studied abroad at the Mannheim Musikhochschule in Mannheim, Germany with famed tenor Alejandro Ramirez, bringing a celebrated taste of American contemporary repertoire to the traditional conservatory.

Some of Kathryn’s favorite scenes include those of Adele, Yum-Yum, Cunegonde, and Gilda. Kathryn has also been awarded numerous music and academic scholarships at both the Peabody Conservatory and the University of Connecticut, receiving Peabody Merit Scholarships, appearing on the Dean’s List each semester at UConn, and being honored twice as a New England Scholar.
